Well of course it is. February 2, 2012 marks another Groundhog Day. Here's hoping spring will arrive early, though it seems the wish has come prematurely. Wishing you a creative New Year whether you're an artist or an accountant! So my New Year's resolution for 2012 is to be much better about posting. I'd love to help fuel that creative spark as well as find it. Truly, there's nothing like a new year to give you that boost.

Christmastime came and brought a box of product samples of my latest illustrations for Mudpuppy. Perfect for budding fashionistas: All Four Seasons Magnetic Figures - Galison/Mudpuppy. It reminded me of my own childhood, creating paper dolls and storing them in recycled plastic sleeves that stored old bank books—creative packaging at its finest. Mudpuppy's is an award-winning magnetic doll product, a rendition of the paper doll, using a substantial tin case that serves as the magnetic backing to hold the backdrops, figures, and their lovely little outfits.

What's new for 2012? Other than the usual musings, sitings, and latest projects, I plan to bring art tips and behind-the-scenes creations. Stay tuned!

Design Sponge's Grace Bonney was hosting a book giveaway for a free personalized copy of "Design Sponge at Home," their summer newspaper and some of the ribbons flowers featured in the book. A Devilish Edge

It's always fun making a departure from my usual genre and into the world of comics—especially dark, devilish ones. Todd Stashwick and Dennis Calero have created a weekly comic strip called Devil Inside, which just celebrated its year-long run at San Diego Comic Con. I was asked to illustrate a dream sequence for one of the main characters, Sophie. The result is a cool juxtaposition of styles. Take a look and if you like what you see, click on the RSS feed. You won't be disappointed!

Anthrolopologie never seems to be short on ideas, but this one lends itself to our child-like sensibilities. I think they're rather charming.

I had the honor of illustrating a poster for a fundraising event on Fire Island featuring Martha Wash, best known for singing "It's Raining Men" and the voice behind The Weather Girls. An icon for the gay community, the assignment serendipitously coincided with the legalizing of gay marriage here in New York. I almost felt a part of history! The poster was art directed by Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez of Somos Arte. It was a departure from my usual projects and a welcome change. I enjoyed doing work for the "adult" world and hope to do more in the future.

At the Ballet with Mudpuppy

A ballet where the prima ballerina is a cat, the admiring audience a dog, an orchestra pit full of piggies, and you have my latest Color Me Puzzle from Mudpuppy! This one's unique because it's double-sided. On one side you get the full-color illustration, on the other, a black and white version of the same image, so that once you've assembled the piece you can color it. You even get a nice set a of fat wipe-off crayons to boot! How can you not be a fan of Mudpuppy?

Up Crocodile Creek

If you're a fan of puzzles (I know I am) I think you'll like this huge floor puzzle packaged by Crocodile Creek. They have a line of Tower Puzzles (they call them that because they each measure about 4 feet in length!), and one of them, Kids World Tower Floor Puzzle, I had the privilege of illustrating. Here's a link of an online retailer that carries it, including, of course, Crocodile Creek. I'm a big fan of their products and I hope mine lives up to their reputation.

In the latest issue of High Five Magazine, in a piece called "Good Morning," I illustrated two landscape images, one city, one country. Including more architecture in my work has always been a challenge for me so I knew I had to step up to the plate with this particular job. Normally I rely on character as a focal point to my work. In this case, I treated the countryside as one character and the city as the other.

So I've taken quite a long hiatus from posting, namely because I had my first born daughter just before Christmastime. It's been a rough winter, but the sun shone inside with our new addition! Needless to say, it's been a wonderful winter break so far. I'm getting used to the idea of being someone's mother now, and easing slowly back into career moves, slowly being the key word. For now I'm enjoying these fleeting newborn moments. Here's a look at my holiday card which I had printed but never really got to send out. Some friends and family were able to enjoy the electronic version, however, the next best thing. Oh well.

Like the sketch says, it was an exhausting day after working, unpacking, errands whatever, carrying around a growing belly, and I was resting on the sofa only to have my dog perched on his pillow, sitting up, staring at me, ears perked and confused by my state. He probably needed something and I just hadn't the energy to give back, not even a pat on the head. But he did get a portrait out of me.

Normally I leave the cover for last, but this time, since I decided that my chosen theme, "The View from Up Here," will record events around my growing baby bump, I started drawing (cutting and pasting) the first obvious thing to me. Can't really explain the bright yellow, pasted in giant hands, but in a way it effectively calls attention to the belly. I do have a love for fashion illustration so I incorporated a bit of that into the piece. I can't say this book will be consistent with what I normally do, but that's the fun of sketchbooks, creating unexpected things and whatever suits my mood to draw, think, create. I plan on recording a series of events or "non-events" surrounding this very confusing, exciting, crazy and hormonal time. This year has seen many changes and I hope to sketch all that stuff in as well. More to come!

The New Place...

...is coming along. Here are some snippets of my studio, some parts you might recognize from older posts, only rearranged. I particularly love what used to be my main corner desk unit is now a long work table with ample storage. The desktop is a door I'm thinking of painting. The only thing I'm sort of tired of is all the black, but it suits me fine for now. I made the bathroom sign which turned out to be a fun but necessary kitsch, because my guests tend to get confused by where it is given our long hall of doorways. The apartment was built before the 20th C with neat details, so maybe as it comes together, I'll post more.

As you can see it's been a busy summer. Can you tell by the Christmas-themed image?

Not that you would know since I haven't posted a lick all season. But trust me, busy busy as a bee I have been. Went through a major move from my home of ten and a half years (!!) to a bustling town closer to NYC. I'm still unloading some things, constantly rearranging and organizing, and it goes a lot slower when you're carrying a load yourself.

Yes, that's right, I'm sporting a new baby bump (don't know what kind of load you were thinking)! As of today I'm a week shy of seven months along and due right around Christmastime. Here's an illustration I did for Amscan a bit ago to commemorate what I've been doing...you guessed it, Christmas shopping. It's a bit different from what I normally do, but what's fun about Amscan is creating art in styles that aren't always your own, keeping things interesting. Still I do like to put my own stamp on new styles.

I illustrated a series of books for Picture Window Books, written by Amanda Doering Tourville, about Friends with Disabilities, and am very pleased with the results, especially in the design and printing of the series. If you have young friends or family members with Dyslexia, ADHD, Autism or Down Syndrome, these important books help children understand their peers who may be living with any of these disabilities.

OK, this is the last time I'll be spouting out about groundhogs for a while now, but of course, today I must because it IS Groundhog Day! Most of the groundhogs throughout the country, including Punxsutawney Phil, saw their shadows, and unfortunately for us cold weather dwellers, the prediction calls for 6 more weeks of winter. Hargis Art Services Studios and Gallery is presenting a year long children's exhibit in Greenville, SC! If you're in the area, please stop in and peruse. You'll see art by many children's illustrators working today including myself. I'm presenting four illustrations created for Highlights High Five Magazine, which won the 2008 AEP Award for Best Illustration in the K-5 category.

A Panel about Blogging and a Nostalgic Visit

Pratt Institute's Career Services hosted a panel on “Blogging as Branding,” and I had the privilege of being a part of this two hour presentation which included a feature on this very blog, as well as an opportunity to be back on Pratt's campus since wearing my cap and gown.

Attendance was high and the panelists included a broad range of disciplines from Architecture to Fashion, Illustration to Industrial Design. Aside from myself, panelists included Emily Baltz, editor and contributor of Core 77, a blog originally started by two Pratt I.D. students in 1995, Richard Sarrach from Pratt's own Architecture faculty and co-founder of core.form-ula, Chei Wei, also a Pratt a alum and Architecture faculty for his blog cwwang.com, Nathan Hartswick for blog.asgoodandbetter.com, and fashion designer, Eric Gaskins, for emperorsoldclothes.blogspot.com.

Each had his and her own view and purpose about "Why a blog?" and "What's next?" I discussed its marketing potential and ways in which clients can see my creative process. Others use it as a way to voice their opinions in their respective industries as well as a forum for students to find an outlet of resources. In general, I believe we put ourselves out there in the the blog-o-sphere because in some sense, it's a way to challenge ourselves to grow, and in the process, be open to feedback, positive or negative. As far as what the future holds, time can only tell where this format can lead with the lightning fast pace that is information technology. I hope to continue to interest and enthrall consistent, quality content.

A really big thrill for me was a chance to tour the campus for the first time in many years. It's changed considerably since I graduated, particularly in its landscape of beautiful sculptures and brick pathways. I had a slice of pizza at the P.I. Shop, my old hangout, which looked shiny and new and even served Starbucks coffee. I was a bit envious of the students and their precious time there. I only remember it fondly. It was a nostalgic rush which I hope to revisit again soon. Thank you to Pratt's Career Services for the opportunity and privilege!

My Amazing Encounter with Cathrene Valente Youngquist

This past June I was shopping and strolling through Westport, CT with my husband. We walked into a bath and body store where were greeted by a very pretty and friendly salesperson. Needless to say, we decided to buy a few bars of soap and shaving lotion. After our sales lady rang up the purchases I handed her my card. She took a look at my name, longer than one normally would and asked, "You wouldn't happen to be an illustrator would you?"

My heart skipped a beat. Perhaps she had seen my work before, was a big fan and recognized my name. The possibility did come to mind for a split second. Then she said something like, "Cathrene Youngquist, who wrote the Three Billygoats Gruff and Mean Calypso Joe, is my mom. You illustrated that right?" I answered with a resounding squeak, "Yes!"

Well, the encounter brought me even greater delight in this astonishing coincidence! When I worked on the book, I never had any contact with Ms. Youngquist. Children's book publishing works this way, in that each creator works directly with the editor, not with each other, except in rare circumstances. Apparently, Cathrene, had written a sequel to the story and this chance encounter seemed the perfect impetus in trying to get it published.

The Billygoats Gruff and Mean Calypso Joe

That very evening, I had a chance to speak to Ms. Youngquist. She told me about the many young audiences she has entertained by reading the Billygoats Gruff story aloud and using stuffed animal goats complete with beanie and scarf, and a stuffed Mean Calypso Joe with "seaweed hair flying" to reenact the scenes! She then read to me the sequel, Mean Calypso Joe and the Pirates of the Caribbee, and so beautifully she told it, this time in rhyme. I told her I'd be happy to illustrate the story and even contribute a piece to help sell it.

We talked for over a half hour on the phone. Finally, just this past Sunday I had the pleasure of meeting her in person over lunch and a tour of my studio. We talked about our work, she gave me valuable advice with my own manuscripts and I had the pleasure of reading several of her works that I hope to see in print one day.

I hope a talent like hers does not continue to go unnoticed especially since Billygoats is now out of print and going for an astounding $95-$200 a copy! I dare you to pay dah toll and pick up a copy! Moreover, the sequel is worth taking a look at, publishers, if you dare to take a chance on talent.

I'm Blogging About Blogging at Pratt Institute!

I've been invited to be on a panel of bloggers at my Alma mater, Pratt Institute. This means, I have to gear up and know what the heck I'm talking about. I've been taking the day to prepare so I'll sound like a competent panelist tomorrow. ~~It doesn't guarantee Pratt students will get their money's worth...oh wait, they're going to read this tomorrow.~~

The Art of Providence

Aside from the privilege of being a part of the University of Rhode Island's children's illustration exhibit, it was an opportunity to finally explore Providence, a city that I've always been curious about visiting. After all, RISD was the school I was almost going to go to, but at the time I had my heart set on being a successful fashion designer, and Pratt, being in New York, well, the rest is history. Now, as a working illustrator and, ahem, aspiring writer, I found a concentration of creativity in the small, pristine city of Providence, RI.

Providence Art Club, Graveyard behind Cathedral of St. John, Episcopal (both Lovecraft and Poe were inspired by this graveyard), Fleur de Lys Studio (The Call of Cthulhu), Halsey House (served as the Ward house in The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, Lovecraft's only novel)

One interesting way to explore the city is to take a walking tour inspired by the works and life of H.P. Lovecraft, who was once a resident of the city. I was accompanied by my husband and friends and we walked for hours around College Hill, strolling up and down some pretty steep hills and narrow streets. The tour lead us to uncover many wonderful things about the city, including its really old cemeteries (some headstones dated back Pre-Revolutionary War), graceful American architecture, beautiful libraries, and of course, the institutions of Brown University and Rhode Island School of Design. We also stopped at the beautiful RISD Museum which housed an impressive collection of historical pieces and modern masterpieces in art and design. I also highly recommend shopping at the museum's gallery, which includes works by RISD's alumnae and faculty.

So go to Providence, even if you don't have an exhibit to attend like I did, because Providence is, itself, a work of art.

Imagination! The World of Children's Book Illustrators

All month long, the University of Rhode Island Providence Campus is showcasing a wonderful exhibit that I am proud to be a part of. It includes 15 published illustrators and work from RISD's Children's Illustration Certificate Program. It was also an opportunity to show off my latest published work, Groundhog Weather School (Putnam).

Last week was reception night and my first time in Providence. However, being the responsible blogger that I am (actually I didn't have the forethought to photograph the actual exhibit), I thought I'd marvel you with a few interior pieces from the show as well as the character sketches and layouts that are on display (the collection shows the creative progression of the book).

I also had the pleasure of chatting it up with fellow llustrators at the show, a few of whom I had met before and will be seeing again at the upcoming Annual Highlights Illustrator's Party, including Sharon Lane Holm, Nancy Cote, Jamison Odone and Mary Jane Begin.

What a nice way to kick off the month! Starting today, the University of Rhode Island will be hosting an exhibit entitled: Imagination! The World of Children's Book Illustrators. Sounds so sparkly doesn't it? Well of course, because yours truly will be one of the guest artists and I'll be bringing along some of my books to sign and, ahem, sell. I'll be showing off my latest book, Groundhog Weather School (G.P. Putnam's Sons), which will be previewed at the exhibit throughout the month of September (the actual release date isn't until December of this year). Lucky for you, you can be the first to see it! I happened to be attending the exhibit the same day my husband was on the opposite coast attending the San Diego Comic Con where he spoke to Barron in person, who said, "there's not going to be any other show (of his work) like it." I found it to be an overwhelming experience of one man's unabashed, unedited, courageous display of his inner thoughts and brilliant sketches contained in volumes and volumes (2 floors!) of sketchbooks (over 140 books), each filled with beautiful compositions of drawing and text, complete with loose pages.

His influence in the world of modern illustration resonates with at least 2 generations of illustrators working today. As a student, I was one of those influenced, and to some degree, still am to this day. One can't help be but inspired if not by his drawing but his ability to create profound, detailed and complex weaving of pictures and text in a most beautiful poetic way, or by his uncensored look at the business of illustration and storytelling and the thoughts and questions surrounding it.
I'm an artist trying to make sense of what I saw in words, and honestly, it's not my strong suit. It was simply overwhelming. But I've posted some pictures, a taste of what I experienced here, so perhaps if you've never heard of the man, then go explore his work. You're bound to find something in it that will make you think differently about approaching a blank page.

I had the pleasure of being a guest at the South Florida SuperCon, thanks to an invitation given to my husband by the guys that run the show. I've attended many conventions before, and this one sticks out because of the fabulous Florida backdrop, the friendly guys that run the show, the lovely accommodations, an appearance by Bruce Campbell, and Comigirl. Yes, that's right, Comigirl is a comic book fan that reports about comics from the female perspective! I had the pleasure of meeting her by way of my husband, and it turns out she's done some research on me and decided to do a "quick" (because it's a relative term here) little interview for her site. I'm a bit shy about posting this, because let's face it, who doesn't cringe when they watch themselves on video. Comigirl runs a great site, so if you're big into the genre, her's is a nice place to stop. Enjoy!

Horror Inspired

My husband and I took a recent day trip to New Paltz, NY where we visited the Mohonk Mountain Resort and made a day of hiking, canoeing and eating a gourmet buffet. The resort is gorgeous and...unusual. There's a mystical appeal about the place, haunting and enchanting. The views of New York and beyond are breathtaking. The architecture of the hotel is a Victorian marvel, like something out of the old west, with it's rickety floors, wrap-around porches and Spanish-tiled clay roofs. And it's enormous.

So word is Stephen King was inspired by the hotel to write "The Shining." One can see why it's easy to speculate this little tidbit. While we sat in one of the lounges, I came across a wonderful, little, framed illustration on the wall by none other than Edward Gorey. This hotel inspires some great artists of the macabre and it inspired me to want to return again.

Pretty Princess

Galison makes wonderfully designed paper products that you'd want to display in your home, pieces of art, if you will. So when I got a call from Galison's art director for an illustration assignment, I was thrilled!

I was told the product was for their Mudpuppy block puzzle line, specifically made for 2-3 year olds, so I quickly hopped onto their site, clicked on the product, and noticed that great illustrators and classic characters like Eric Carle, Maurice Sendak, and Curious George, respectively were represented.
Then, when the art director told me I was to illustrate princesses of different times and places, I was doubly excited to take on the job! It took me back to the time I was three, drawing princesses with large...no...tent-like skirts.

I'm pleased to show you one of the pieces here (there are 6 total), a classic 1950's princess, her lovely skirt, appropriately large and poofy. It won't be on the market until June 1, 2010, but I couldn't wait that long to share even a taste, plus the art director was kind enough to let me!

GAGA Arts Festival 2009

I finally found some time to write about my first open studio this past weekend at the Garnerville Arts and Industrial Center. It was a big success thanks to the local community and despite the scattered showers and cooler milder temperatures.

Since I've yet to build up a collection of large paintings, I decided to show the original art from my published work, some of which have not seen the light of day in years. I finally had an excuse to pull them out and hang them, rather casually on clips and string, for all to appreciate, including myself. It was cool to see them all up in one space.

I had a table set with crayons and pencils, prepared an activity book called "The Best Day," where the kids could write about their best day and illustrate it. I also brought my button maker for kids and "big kids" to make buttons. It was a hit! I also created a display on "How a Book is Published: an artist's perspective."

I sold a few books, and while most of the art was also for sale, with the sluggish economy, the pieces were admired from afar.

I most enjoyed talking to the attendees and all the kids. I met many bright children, some who wanted to be illustrators, others who were fascinated by the process and still others who just liked taking the time to create a story. I met a young girl who suffered from Hodgkins Lymphoma and was nearing the end of her treament with a good prognosis. As a survivor of childhood leukemia, we bonded over our "war stories," and before she left she showed me the story of her "Best Day," which she dedicated to me...excuse me...having a moment.

For many it was a big learning process, an eye-opener for local teachers and the regular art appreciator. So indeed it was a success even if I sold not a one painting.

Alden Staffing hosted their 3rd Annual juried group show last night, featuring artists from the New York tri-state area. The show was held in Norwalk, CT, at Gravity Artworks on Isaac Street. The gallery is a basement loft space that housed pieces by over 50 artists, including myself. I saw a few familiar faces like my artist friends Jean Michel and Marissa Gilberg, both of whom had pieces hanging. I met a few new people as well, all sharing the same goal: celebrating the need to create and be creative, and to build up our egos in a down economy.

Creative Recycling at Home

I'm a huge fan of before and after design projects, especially since I love to scour Craig's list, Ebay and local antique shops for the next best find. I finally had a chance to create my own "before and after" which I'm particularly proud of. What makes me even more ecstatic is that one of my favorite inspirational blogs also found it pretty cool! Check out Design Sponge for the scoop and larger pics!

For all you do-it-yourselfers, it took about three hours of sanding, two coats of latex paint, more sanding along the edges for a bit of a distressed finish, and a cut of wrapping paper from Target to line the drawer. I then added the classic Eames chair (more love) and I now have a one-of-a-kind piece that's easy on the eyes and the environment!

My newest painting featured in my March 20th entry, was accepted into the "Awfully Beautiful" group show at the Gravity Artworks gallery, located at 16 Isaac Street, Norwalk, CT 06850. IF: Poise

I just finished my ad for Picture Book, and still had the idea of dress up on the brain, but this time in a calmer setting. For the newest IF theme, "Poise," I thought of the word in relation to my mom's mantra growing up. It was so important for my mom, to instill in my sister and I, that we be poised and graceful. Often times my mother made clothes for us (usually matching I might add), and when I was getting measured I would practice my poise. Can't say I was always successful at it.

Picture Book

Here's my latest illustration to be printed in Picture Book 2010, an annual publication which features promotional pieces of children's illustrators. It's probably one of the busiest pieces I've ever done, and the most challenging in terms of keeping my main character in focus. I think, even with the chaos around her, she manages to grab your eye, and hopefully stir interest in perusing the wonderland that is her mom's dressing room. If you doubt that, just take a look at the dancing dog!

Discovering Ben Shahn

I love to post about personally discovering artists that were big in there time and whose art have a timeless, very current style. Ben Shahn is no exception. On Monday I was in a local antique shop with my husband, who was perusing the bookshelves, when he picked up this beautifully bound hardcover complete with case, containing wonderfully graphic illustrations and typography by Ben Shahn.

The book is a poem, written by Wendell Barry in response to the assassination of the young President Kennedy, originally published in The Nation magazine. It is entitled November 26, 1963. So I did a bit more research on Ben Shahn and discovered a lot of material, as well as the huge influence he has on current illustrators. In fact, the site I frequent, Illustration Friday, actually posted a quick little bio about him.

Funny how we may come to discover things that are right under our noses. But it's great when the discovery is organically grown and only cost $5.

Got my latest postcard promotional back from the printer and I'm happy with the results. The paper has a nice weight to it with a satin finish. I also have a corner rounder, a handy dandy industrial piece of equipment that, well, rounds corners. The result is a little something more special than your average postcard.

It's been a while since I've put brush to canvas, and I'm sharing it with you because I guess I promised to do that. I'm kind of apprehensive about it since I'm opening myself up to all kinds of scrutiny, but that's just the nature of the business, and I do believe it's meant to be shared. Plus, it's the best way for me to grow and get better.

Anyway, I'm entering this piece for a group show that's being juried by Alden Staffing. It's moderately sized measuring 18" x 24" and it's oil and graphite on canvas. The theme is "Awfully Beautiful" and this I titled "A Hair's Breath from 16." Keeping fingers crossed....

IF: Legendary

The first thing that came to mind when I thought legendary was Myrna Loy. I'm embarrassed to admit she was a relatively new discovery for me. My husband and I watched every Thin Man movie over the past few months where she starred so perfectly alongside William Powell. She was so brilliant in those films I wanted to know more about her. I was amazed to discover that she dedicated her time as a full-time employee for the American Red Cross throughout WWII and only acted in one film in that time. So I wanted to illustrate Ms. Loy after this discovery. Her talent, beauty, and selfless dedication make her legendary.

Slowly But Surely

My painting studio is slowly coming together, much slower than anticipated. February has proven to be a month for distractions and paperwork (with tax season in full swing). But with each visit I bring another book, a chair, a couple table legs, and lots of material to get ideas flowing. Of course, and not soon enough, I finally have internet. As a matter of fact, this is my first entry here.

My dog hangs out with me too, so he and I can enjoy walks by the creek. He has a nervous energy that makes him a little uneasy with the building's old creaky sounds, the blazing gas heater above, and the door slams by the new neighbors or maintenance guy. And while I have wonderfully large windows, they sit a bit too high from the floor, which makes him too short to observe his favorite past time, looking out the window watching passers by.

So we're both adjusting after working from home for a good while. But despite some of the changes, I know it'll be a very exciting adventure.

As we draw closer to the spring season, I'm reminded that we're not close enough, when during the first evening of March, here in New York, we are welcomed by a snowstorm. I'm reminded of one of my favorite children's books growing up by Ezra Jack Keats, The Snowy Day. I'm also in awe of how much influence his work has had in my own work, and I never really realized it until recently. I guess that's where the subconscious plays a lovely role.

Evaline Ness

I can't remember where I discovered Ms. Ness's artwork, but I do know that I'm about five years off from having been part of a generation that remembers and considers her books as classics. It's clear why and I'm glad to have found them even if it took thirty years. I bought a few second hand editions of her books and marvel at her range.

For all you crime novel fans out there, Ms. Ness was the former wife of Eliot Ness (of The Untouchables fame), the crime hero that brought down Al Capone. It just made my discovery of her talent that much sweeter.

I decided to be bold and feature a closeup, a remembrance if you will, of my sophomore year in high school. Unfortunately, aside from the stunning green eyes, all other details are quite accurate, including the very large pimple in the middle of my nose.

It was picture day—photos to be taken for our school ID cards, which we were to carry on our most self-conscious persons all year long, to compare and...contrast. Pinned to our white and blue uniforms were red name tags. Mine might as well have been a label announcing the 8th wonder of the world that existed on my nose.

What do you think my instinct was when I saw it that morning?

New York Comiccon!

You could say I fell into comics by way of my husband, but over the years I grew to appreciate the medium, the people, and the industry like aged wine. We started out with a digital comic book coloring studio in the mid-nineties, and now I had just attended my umpteenth convention as supporter of my husband's rapidly growing comic fan base. I do color here and there, recently a few covers for Marvel Comics, but I love to be a part of the collective of professionals that attend these conventions, trading experiences and techniques, sharing ideas or yuckin' it up with the bevy of jokesters, and there are many to be had!

Aside from business, most conventions mean reconnecting with old friends and meeting new ones, pretty impressive talents at that. Despite being big talents, they're just really nice people.

In honor of Groundhog Day, I would love to show you something from my latest book about groundhogs, which I just completed for G.P. Putnam's Sons. But because the book isn't slated for release until the end of the year, I'm not at liberty to share any of it. So I thought I'd show you my latest release instead…the adorable February 2009 cover of Highlights High Five Magazine. Moms and Dads, look for it on your local newsstand, or as I like to imagine it, at any pediatrician's office worn and torn from the multitude of children that have already thumbed through it. Because as pretty as it is on the outside, there's a slew of good reading to be had on the inside. Plus, it's the least I could hope for since Punxsutawney Phil predicts another 6 more weeks of winter!

Fresh Space

I'm very excited to introduce what will be my new painting studio come February 1 at GAGA (Garnerville Arts and Industrial Center) located just a mile from my home. It's a modest sized space full of inspirational potential, texture and personality, but most importantly, it's surrounded by other creative people. The old buildings used to serve as textile mills for their first 125 years, and now they house work and exhibition spaces for sculptors, painters, woodworkers, musicians, photographers and the like. As with many converted warehouses in New York City's surrounding towns and suburbs, GAGA hosts gallery shows while private studios are open to the public every summer, for the community to enjoy. So paint I will, and perhaps sculpt and photograph, but I'll be sure to share what I can here.

Talented Friends...

...always equals fun stuff! I'm grateful for having so many talented friends, many with artistic abilities that allow them to create for a living. I have a friend that loves chickens so much, she named her website after it...Chickengirldesign.com. Well, of course, when I see a chicken I think of her. So I sent her 2 lonely chicken placeholders I got from Italy, that I never used, only for a little inspiration. So I decided they could use a better home, and in doing so, I was rewarded with more fun stuff. To my surprise, I received more poultry inspired art in return! Well actually, a notepad designed and illustrated by the talented chicken girl herself, and an equally fun card. I love random gifts in the mail, especially when handled with care by friends. Thanks, Jannie!

Smooth as Silk

Silk screening is my newfound love. Just yesterday, I finally had a chance to learn. My friend and I made the trek down to 3rd Ward in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, to take an intensive, five-hour long workshop on Screen Printing 101. It was a hot, muggy day in New York. Unfortunately for us the room was A.C. free, but no matter. We were finally going to learn how to screen print.

We each came prepared with a black and white design and materials to print on. For my bird-themed studio, I decided to draw something, well, bird related, and within the design create a subtle monogram. I brought along some scraps of fabric, an old canvas, two shirts and a couple of plain gray pillowcases that desperately needed some love.

The instructor was thorough and informative. He spent most of the class explaining and demonstrating the process using a photosensitive process to create the screen stencil. In an effort to save time, the screens were already prepared with the emulsion. Our black and white designs were printed on acetate, placed on the screens, held down with glass, then exposed to light for twenty minutes. When the light was exposed to the surface, the areas that were not blocked by design, hardened. The "soft" areas covered by the designs were washed out to open the mesh that would eventually allow ink to pass through.

Some of the screens were not properly exposed, and so the process had to be repeated with about six screens, allowing us to see the instructor remove the emulsion, dry the screens, re-coat and re-expose them. While it was frustrating for him, it enabled us to visually understand the technique since we never really got a chance to practice prep the screens on our own.

After four long hours of demonstration and lecture, most of the class had screens ready to print. It was near dinner time, I was hungry and longing for a bottle of water. When finally he showed us how to squeegee the ink onto the print surface, I was raring to go. I didn't bother with a practice sheet. I mixed my mustard yellow color, prepared the first pillowcase and squeegeed my design onto the fabric surface. The design came through beautifully, the color looked sophisticated on the gray surface. So I went squeegee crazy and applied the design onto the second pillowcase, a t-shirt, a white tank top and stretched canvas until I had my fill. I started thinking of ways I could start a business. I wouldn't be surprised if most do when they first learn to screen print.

Ironically, there was a BBQ pig roast going on at the same time just outside where we were washing and drying our screens. Yet, I didn't get a taste of it or a chance to satisfy my thirst. My friend and I were anxious to leave the very crowded, very sweaty scene, to down a cold beverage, have some dinner, and talk about what we would print next.

Ballet Encore

I finally got the rest of my ballerina figurines from a line I designed for Grasslands Road called "Little Ladies." I'm very excited about how beautifully they turned out. The detail is exquisite. I meant them to look like little pieces of jewelry and, happily, I think I accomplished just that, with the help of a few very fine sculptors in Asia. I wish I could tell you who they are.

I plan on putting up a section in my site to show the line. I think they're worth showcasing. It's the first gift line I ever designed, and I hope it won't be the last. Here is the group of figurines. The line consists of these plus a spinning musical figurine, frames, and plaques. They're available in specialty gift stores across the country.

PS1 Highlight Exhibit

Just last weekend, not one week after my lackluster MoMA visit, I ventured out to Queens to see my friend. It was another rainy weekend, so we skipped the outdoor beer garden festival to attend the indoor/outdoor party at P.S. 1 in Long Island City. It was the first of many in the summer season. P.S. 1, MoMA's little sister, is a contemporary art gallery converted from, what used to be, an elementary school, hence its name.

Outside, the agricultural exhibit, complete with livestock, was nice. It was a lovely interactive exhibit with vegetation artfully housed in recyclable cardboard tubing. It was a little wet from the scattered rain showers, which was great for the vegetation, but not so much for the grass seating. However, with the same base, they also created a few water-proof seats using rubber sheathing and tacks. It would eventually be the perfect perch for people watching.

Inside, I could have done without the angry political exhibits (mostly installations), probably in celebration of Independence Day, but still, not what one would expect from a renowned gallery in terms of concept and execution. There was one nice Olafur Eliasson piece, but not enough to keep us inside. So we stuck to people watching outside. The sun made its entrance every so often, keeping us satisfied for quite some time in our drum chairs. So I sketched.

Then the ten-piece band started tuning their instruments. Well, at least we thought they were. We noticed the conductor, yes there was a conductor, swinging his baton, leading the musicians in a unified chaos of sound. The rhythm was non-existent, and what sounded like tuning instruments was actually experimental…something. Well, I never claimed to be a music aficionado. Needless to say, the crowd, save for a small handful of people, was not enthralled. My friend was lucky enough to have been to another summer event here when the Scissor Sisters played and Bono performed, unannounced. This time, a DJ saved our sense of rhythm and beat by spinning between breaks. I was hoping that, eventually, some fabulous surprise performer or band would show up. No such luck.

Soon enough, the rain fell again, so we decided to make our exit, relieved we had good reason to leave the party early.

My birthday fell on a Wednesday. It was a perfectly beautiful day in New York. I had lunch at my usual diner where they piled a small bowl full of bananas and strawberries, placed a lit candle on top and sang for me the birthday song. I played with the dog, worked on the children's book I'm illustrating, and went out to Manhattan with my husband, where we met 8 other friends at a highly recommended BBQ spot.

Unfortunately, the online recommendation came from someone who was probably turned on by frat houses, so my husband and I, and our eight friends, hauled ourselves 2 blocks to a lovely Greek Tapas restaurant. That's just about the best thing about Manhattan. You need not venture far to find quality dining. We dined on flaming cheese, a variety of seafoods and meats with a Mediterranean flair. My friend feared for her life every time they lit a platter of cheese on fire. It was a popular dish that night.

The popular gift to get for someone like me? Sketchbooks, sweets, Starbucks, and the bonus gift, a cool tote. I know I'm loved when I get a gift card for crack. I even got one in the mail from friends that sent their regrets. The sketchbooks ranged from Moleskine, to your fancy stationery store variety, to a recycled children's book turned sketchbook. Now if you could only see my sketches under the influence of java.

The lesson of the day, don't sit too close to flaming cheese.

MoMA...meh.

Days before my birthday, I spent some time at the MoMA with two of my friends, the three of us hoping to see some incredible work. And if we didn't, well we'd enjoy the architecture. Thankfully my friend was a member, so she got us in for a fraction of the normally pricey entrance fee. Perhaps it was the summer season, but needless to say, while we did see inspired work, we had to work our way up to it, literally. The exhibits improved upon ascension.

Olafur Eliasson's work caused my friends to turn monochromatic.

The first two floors, consisted mainly of video installations and what looked like student projects (but weren't) with very few exceptions. Sadly I felt, floors 1 and 2 were a waste of time. Not what one would expect in such prized fine art real estate. The third floor featured installations by Olafur Eliasson. Interesting. I'm not a big fan of installation art in general, but I was able to grasp Mr. Eliasson's work, primarily because the ideas and executions were simple and elegant.

MoMA Guard

Upon reaching the fourth floor, we discovered what I was most familiar with--painting--and MoMA's permanent collection. Many of them I've seen before, but always comforted by their presence. So at this time, I pulled out my sketchbook, settled down, and drew the scene around me.

Just as we were about to head out, we poked around the gift shop. Strangely enough I was happier browsing the various tchotchkes inspired by good design, rather than muddling through the first few exhibits. I spotted a really cool perpetual calendar, so my friend offered to pick it up for me as a birthday gift!

After paying we were ready to exit, until we noticed that floor five featured a preview show open to members only. Since my friend was one of them, we happily proceeded to explore: Dali: Painting and Film. It was like being on the list and getting into the most popular night club in town...sort of.

While I'm not Dali's biggest fan, I certainly admire his talent and welcomed the exhibit like a breath of fresh air, and relieved that I would leave the MoMA feeling satisfied. It was a very well presented show with Dali's early film work on display, paintings that inspired the films, and his set design for the Hollywood film, Spellbound. All in all, they were some of the finest Dali paintings I have ever seen.

By the time we finally headed out, the rain came, in buckets. My (member) friend treated me to a MoMA umbrella as a birthday gift and we happily ventured out in the rain for coffee and cake.

The days of finishing schools are once again upon us. I designed a card for a dear friend of mine, whose brilliant idea for a new business couldn't have come at more perfect time. At the risk of sounding like my parents, or better yet, like an old fart goody goody, I've observed a generation of kids and their parents that suffer from attitudes of entitlement, while a simple 'please,' 'thank you' or 'pardon me' is hard to come by. The Silver Spoon offers individual or group classes and seminars on etiquette and social graces for every age. My hats off to Baroness Maria von Alvensleben for launching her new business with a fresh and modern take on good ol' manners.

IF: Seed

Like a seed that is planted in a farm, this is a sketch, the start of a finish, made about a farm designed for children's tableware. But unlike the seeds that grow to become a plant, vegetable or fruit, this one's a sketchy kernel rooted in cyberspace, only a semblance of a thought or approach to the final product. Oh, but don't you think the animals are fetching?

My ballerinas have arrived! For those of you who may have seen the initial sculpts (July 07 entry), I finally have product samples in full-color complete with glitter and gemstones. Super girly! I ordered the rest of the designs in various poses and colors, and I'll share them once they arrive. But I'm thrilled with my initial pieces. They've come a long way from a few, simple, two-dimensional drawings.

My Alteration Ego

Check out My Alteration Ego, my "alter blog" that's all about fashion illustration and everything that inspires it. Why keep a separate blog about fashion illustration when this one could cover it, you ask? Well, I'll answer anyway. There's something about the subject of fashion and all that inspires it that, personally, I find so different from the commercial art world as a whole. Fashion illustration is created specifically for an industry that creates products made to promote a certain lifestyle, or at least the feeling of one. It does so without any apologies.

All those things that inspire that sort of work from me, is a different animal all together, whether it's a particular designer or ad campaign, or a pretty coat I see in a store, or a fantastic bag I have to have. It's a purely subjective, unadulterated, guiltless pleasure of trendsetting aesthetics. So for that reason, I'm devoting a whole other blog, another side of my creative brain, to that particular subject, hopefully interesting enough for you to want to explore and seek inspiration.

I've touched on a few style-worthy subjects, on this my current blog, but I believe there's a whole other world worth exploring that's different enough to deserve its own forum. I hope you go and explore it. Be patient, there'll be a slew of postings soon enough as it's still in its fledgling stage. I hope you enjoy it and what is to come! Keep coming back here for all other experimental illustration and all that is illustration.

Voilà! Just like that it's Spring, and we've gained an extra hour of daylight.

Can't say the same for posts lately. I'm way overdue, so I thought I'd share a few creations from my sister's baby shower to celebrate the new season. Originally, the theme of the baby shower was lilies....which then turned into, lilies, birds, butterflies and eggs. Sounds like...Easter. Perfect timing.

So I illustrated her Evite using all of these motifs, and from that I created matching thank you cards. These days, with Evite, you never see a printed invite, so I thought it would be nice to create a custom thank you card instead.

For decoration, I made a few bird mobiles using felt, various fabrics and mitsumata branches. What's that you ask? I came across Nettleton Hollow, a company in Brooklyn that specializes in decorative branches. From there I purchased mitsumata branches, which are branches that have been stripped of their bark and bleached white. If you soak them long enough, they're bendable. Yes, I got a bit craft-happy. When I found those branches, ideas started racing. As a soon-to-be aunt, I needed to put all my energy of anticipation into something constructive.

However, the favors were the biggest attack of craft crazy I've ever encountered. I counted 10, I say, 10 steps to making these little wunderfavors.

Step 1: A tiny galvanized planter (from IKEA)
Step 2: Ribbon
Step 3: A little tag to match the theme of the shower, designed with the date and occasion, hole-punched and cut
Step 4: A little string to put in the holes to hang the tag
Step 5: Paper strips made to look like a birds nest (pre-cut; I'm not that crazy)
Step 6: Cadbury chocolate mini-eggs (I dream about)
Step 7: Netting for the chocolate eggs
Step 8: Wildflower seeds (lilies were too costly)
Step 9: Little baggies for the wildflower seeds
Step 10: A little instruction card scanned from the original seed packaging, re-colored to match them, printed, cut and stapled to the baggies

The end result ... kinda cute. I'm currently in a 10 step program to de-craftify.
